Introduction
This Special Instruction is used to inspect the following items: air inlet heater, air inlet heater solenoid and the solenoid connections.Inspection Points
Look at the power terminals of the relay for any melted insulators or damaged insulators.
Inspect power terminals on the relay for damage. A damaged terminal stud will be blackened or able to move freely. Remove the relay and replace the relay if damage is found.
Look for missing isolation mounts. Also, look for worn isolation mounts or damaged isolation mounts.
The routing of the power cable should not create a force on the isolation mount on the relay. Provide relief for any items that inhibit the ability of the mounts to isolate the relay from vibration or shock. This may require additional mounting points at the relay or near the relay. A longer wire from the relay to the heater element will also remedy the issue. Power leads must be supported within six to eight inches of the terminal connection at the relay.
Look for any abnormal wear and repair any abnormal wear to the wires that are connected to the relay. The following areas should be inspected: battery, cables for the air inlet heater and control circuit of the Electronic Control Module (ECM)
Terminals should be clean. Clean terminals will provide a good electrical connection to the cables.
Remove the air inlet heater and replace the air inlet heater if the heater assembly or the elbow shows signs of damage. Damage to the air inlet heater includes brown shading of the paint instead of yellow. Torque Requirements
Illustration 1 g01717059
Torque nut (2) to 9 1 N m (7 1 lb ft). Hold nut (6) with an additional wrench as you are applying torque to nut (2) .
Torque isolation mount (5) to 12 1 N m (9 1 lb ft).
Torque mounting hardware (1) to 55 9 N m (41 7 lb ft).Note: Secure the wire with the clip before applying the proper torque of 2.25 0.25 N m (20 2 lb in) to nut (3) as you are holding nut (4) with a wrench.Wire terminal nuts and locking washers are supplied with the relay. Caterpillar recommends the use of a torque wrench such as the Mountz TLS-1360 torque wrench. Note: Not meeting the specified torque limit may cause electrical arcing due to a mechanical failure of the stud on the relay or a loose connection.Wire Size, Terminal Size, Boot Selection and Routing
A boot must be installed on all electrical connections to the air inlet heater relay
