PROBLEM
The drive shaft needs to be inspected and replaced (if necessary) on certain 906H, 907H and 908H compact wheel loaders. The existing drive shaft may not have grease in the slip joint, resulting in spline fretting and failure of the slip joint.

Bolts will be required for all machines.The shaft assembly is only required if the existing drive shaft fails the inspection.
ACTION REQUIRED
Refer to the Service Manual if/as necessary.
The drive shaft has to be inspected to see if there is grease in the slip joint.
1. Remove the bolts holding the drive shaft to the front axle. See Illustration 1.
2. Place a mark on both halves of the drive shaft at the slip joint. See Illustration 2.
3. Remove the short end of the shaft. Be careful not to damage the lip seal.
4. Look for grease in the slip joint. See Illustration 3. If grease is present reassemble the shaft. Be sure the marks are in alignment when the shaft is reassembled. Use new bolts to install the shaft.
5. If there is no grease in the slip joint, replace the drive shaft with a new one. Use new bolts when the shaft is installed.
