Replace Element
Fuel leaked or spilled on to hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To prevent possible injury, turn the start switch OFF when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Drain the fuel from the water separator into a container before removing the water separator retaining clamp.
Refer to the water separator OEM instructions for replacing the element.Engine Protection Devices
Inspect/Check
An inspection and test should be performed for all alarm and shutoff components Every 1000 service hours.Alarms and shutoffs must work properly in order to provide timely warning to the operator and protection for the engine. It is impossible to tell if the engine protection devices are in good working order during normal operation. Engine malfunctions must be simulated in order to test the alarm and shutoff components.To prevent damage to the engine, only authorized service personnel or your Caterpillar dealer should perform the tests. Contact your Caterpillar dealer or refer to the Service Manual for more information.Visual Inspection
Visually check the condition of all sensors and wiring. Look for loose, broken, or damaged wiring and components. Repair or replace any damaged wiring or components immediately.Fuel Control Linkage
Check/Lubricate
Check the fuel control linkage for proper operation and make adjustments if necessary. Refer to the Service Manual for the adjustment procedure.
Typical fuel control linkage grease fittingsSome engines are equipped with fuel control linkage which requires lubrication. Lubricate the grease fittings with 1P-0808 Multipurpose Lithium Grease, or equivalent.
