Typical example of a failed rod eyeBucket and machine linkage bushings may not be receiving adequate lubrication in severe duty applications. This lack of lubrication may be causing the bushings to wear prematurely causing excessive play in the bucket linkage. Excessive play in the bucket linkage places a bending load on the bucket cylinder rod and may result in the bucket cylinder rod breaking at the rod eye to rod transition area. Refer to Illustration 1.Solution
Replace with like parts. Make sure that the bushings in the bucket linkage are not beyond the service limits of the bushings. Refer to Service Magazine, SEPD1442, "Service Limit of the Bushings At the Front Linkages Are Now Available on Certain Excavators" for the service limits of the bushings at the bucket linkages. Make sure the bucket link (1) is not cracked at the welds. Repair or replace as needed. Make sure that all pins in the bucket linkage are not showing signs of excessive wear. Replace as needed.

In extreme duty applications, Caterpillar recommends that you lubricate the front linkage bushings with CAT grease as specified in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Lubricate once every 10 hours of machine operation or 2 to 3 times a day when running the machine 24 hours a day. Refer to Illustration 2 for locations of lubrication points. All other lubrication intervals should follow the recommendation of the Operation and Maintenance Manual for your machine.
