ADAPTER 1945878 - Caterpillar

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the installation procedure, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping rags or cloths should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble.
Check all of the O-ring seals and the components for wear or damage. Replace the components, if necessary.
Lubricate all of the O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

Install housing (17) into spindle (1), as shown. Install Tool (B) through the hole in spindle (1) and through the hole in housing (16).
Install ring (16) into housing (17), as shown.

Use eight bolts (14) and the washers in order to install guide (15) into the inside of spindle (1), as shown.
Remove Tool (B).

Attach a suitable lifting device to spindle (1). Attach the lifting device to a hoist. Use the lifting device and the hoist in order to position spindle (1) for installation onto the rear axle housing. The weight of spindle (1) is 998 kg (2200 lb).
Use 50 bolts (13) and the washers in order to install spindle (1) and the O-ring seal to the rear axle housing. Tighten 50 bolts (13) to a torque of 1224 136 N m (902.8 100.3 lb ft).

Use three bolts (12) and the washers in order to install plate (3) to spindle (1), as shown. Tighten three bolts (12) to a torque of 1224 136 N m (902.8 100.3 lb ft).
The following procedure is used to determine the required thickness of shims for the magnetic sensor:

Install adapter (11) into spindle (1). Tighten adapter (11) to a torque of 55 7 N m (40.57 5.16 lb ft).
Use Tool (C) (not shown) to measure the distance (X). Record this measurement.
Remove adapter (11) from spindle (1).
Subtract the measurement that was recorded in Step 10.b from 242.03 0.08 mm (9.53 0.0031 inch). This is the thickness of shims that are required.
Use a micrometer to assemble shim pack (9) that is equal to the thickness that was calculated in Step 10.d.

Position adapter (11) in a suitable bench vise (not shown).
Apply 5P-3413 Pipe Sealant to the threads of magnetic sensor (5). Install magnetic sensor (5) into adapter (11). Tighten magnetic sensor (5) to a torque of 30 4 N m (22.1268 2.9502 lb ft).
Apply 7M-7456 Compound to the threads of adapter (11). Install adapter (11), magnetic sensor (5), and shims (9) as a unit into spindle (1). Tighten adapter (11) to a torque of 55 7 N m (40.5 5.2 lb ft).
Use two bolts (8), the washers and two spacers (10) in order to install plate (2). Tighten two bolts (8) to a torque of 1224 136 N m (902.8 100.3 lb ft).
