Note: This can be seen on machines that are equipped with the Vital Information Management System (VIMS).When you are approaching a long downgrade and a steep downgrade, the Automatic Retarder Control should be in the ON position. Also, the proper gear must be selected.

If the machine builds up excessive speed, use the manual retarder lever in order to reduce the machine speed. If additional braking is needed, pull down the secondary brake control. This adds more brake force.
Do not shift into the NEUTRAL position and freewheel down a grade.In order to prevent damage to the brake components if the brake oil temperature rises above the crosshatched area, reduce the travel speed or stop the machine until the oil cools.
Always travel with the hoist lever in the FLOAT position. Shift to the top speed that is anticipated. All further shifts will be automatic.During normal operation, use the retarder for all normal braking.Roads can be slick from ice or from snow. Also, roads can be slick from being wet. Reduce the speed of the machine in order to compensate for poor ground conditions.
