The manner in which a vehicle is operated can have a dramatic effect on fuel economy. The following techniques optimize fuel economy by making maximum use of the potential efficiency of the engine and vehicle.Starting Out
Caterpillar truck engines do not require long warm-up times that waste fuel. The time it takes to conduct a walk-around-inspection of the vehicle to check lights, tires, etc.,is sufficient warm-up time.To get the vehicle in motion, use a gear that will result in a smooth, easy start without increasing engine speed above low idle or slipping the clutch. Engage the clutch smoothly. Jerky starts put stress on the drive train and waste fuel.Fuel efficiency of the engine (maximum power produced per unit of fuel consumed) is best in the low to mid rpm range due to less frictional losses within the engine and drive train and lower power demand of engine driven accessories.At low vehicle speeds during low power demand situations, keep engine speed at a minimum. When accelerating under normal level road conditions, the engine should be operated in the most efficient speed range by using only enough power to pick up the next highest gear. This technique of upshifting at the lowest possible rpm is called "progressive shifting".Time to accelerate the vehicle to road speed is reduced because engine speed does not have to fall off as far to synchronize the gears of the transmission, thus top gear is reached sooner.Cruising Speed
It's a simple fact that the faster a vehicle is driven the more fuel it will consume. A few km (miles) per hour can make a significant difference in fuel economy. A practice of driving faster to increase stop time makes those stops very expensive.Cruising is the most common operating condition for most trucks and therefore, provides the greatest opportunity to benefit from operation in the most fuel efficient rpm range of the engine. A significant improvement in fuel economy can be realized by operating the truck in a gear that will keep engine speed between 1800 and 2000 rpm, at part-throttle.Hills
Minimize the number of downshifts. Vehicle speed (momentum) is always lost between downshifts. Unnecessary downshifts waste a portion of that fuel consumed to maintain vehicle speed in the previous gear. Your Caterpillar engine has a very broad usable speed range and excellent torque rise that will provide exceptional hill climbing capability. When climbing a hill, let the engine lug down to peak torque before downshifting and do not be afraid to operate the engine at peak torque if the truck will crest the hill without a downshift. If road speed stabilizes with the engine running at or above peak torque rpm, remain in that gear. This technique will also keep the engine operating in the most fuel efficient rpm
