Note: The approximate coil resistance of the solenoid is 5 ohms at 25 °C (77 °F).This diagnostic code is associated with the Proportional solenoid (Control to tank for hoist head end). The FMI 03 diagnostic code means that the electronic control module (ECM) has determined that the voltage of the solenoid circuit is above normal.The possible causes of the diagnostic code are listed:
The solenoid has failed.
The energize circuit of the solenoid is shorted to the +battery circuit.
The ECM has failed.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear these diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 1239 FMI 03 is active before performing this procedure.Note: Use a calibrated 146-4080 Digital Multimeter for the measurements in this procedure.System Response:The ECM will turn off the solenoid for the hoist pilot system. The hoist system will be forced into the hold mode.When the diagnostic goes away, the following occurs:
The ECM will continue to command the system to be in hold mode until the hoist lever is moved into hold mode.Test Step 1. CHECK THE ENERGIZE CIRCUIT OF THE SOLENOID FOR A SHORT TO THE +BATTERY CIRCUIT
Turn off the key start switch and the disconnect switch.
Disconnect the harness from the solenoid and the ECM.
At the harness connector for the ECM, measure the resistance from contact J1-51 (wire J824-GY(Grey)) to all contacts used in the ECM harness connectors.Expected Result:Each resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.Results:
OK - Each resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - Each resistance is not greater than 5000 ohms. There is a short between J1-51 (J824-GY(Grey)) and the circuit that has a low resistance.Repair: Repair or replace the harness.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE IS STILL ACTIVE
Inspect and clean the harness connector contacts.
Reconnect all harness connectors.
Turn on the disconnect switch and the key start switch.
Operate the machine.
Determine if the CID 1239 FMI 03 diagnostic code is active.Expected Result:CID 1239 FMI 03 is active.Results:
YES - CID 1239 FMI 03 is active. The ECM may have failed.Repair: ECM failure is unlikely. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. Contact the technical communicator of your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. If the ECM must be replaced, refer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace" Section of this manual.STOP
NO - CID 1239 FMI 03 is not active.Repair: The diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor connection or short at one of the connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.STOP
