Problem
Certain Jacobs Model C317 Control Modules may cause the engine brake to intermittently activate while the engine is being fueled. This in turn can result in turbocharger or engine damage.

Action Required
The Jacobs Vehicle Equipment Company recently announced a program to its dealers to rework certain Model C317 Control Modules on 3176 Engines. The rework procedure involves replacing certain brake control modules (either before or after failure) and checking for proper control module grounding. Jacobs has requested that owners of 3176 Engines equipped with a Jacobs Engine Brake contact their local Jacobs Dealer to schedule the repair. To locate a Jacobs Dealer in your area, contact the nearest Jacobs Warehouse Distributor (see the attached list) or call Jacobs directly at (203) 243- 7777. Caterpillar Dealers interested in performing the rework themselves should contact their local Jacobs Warehouse Distributor. The distributor can provide instructions on how to obtain parts, perform the procedure, and submit warranty claims to Jacobs. Prior approval should be obtained from the Jacobs Warehouse Distributor before performing the rework.
