The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem
A potential quality issue on the 173-3272 Friction Disc has been found. Loose friction material and retraction springs have been found in the transmission suction screens. The friction material debris found appears not to have a steel core. The suspected quality issue is the disc was made with an incorrectly sized steel core.
Illustration 1 g06272689
Loose friction material and retraction springs found in transmission suction screens
Solution
Do not operate or work on this product unless you have read and understood the instruction and warnings in the relevant Operation and Maintenance Manuals and relevant service literature. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Proper care is your responsibility.
Caterpillar is aware of this problem, but an interim repair has not been defined. Replace current part 173-3272 Friction Disc with same part.Recommended Field Actions
Implement point of use inspection procedure at all Component Repair Centers (CRC) and Rebuilds for piece parts on hand, using for rebuilds.Inspection Method
Note: Friction discs with the date code of December 5th, 2017 and after, have been inspected for this issue from the supplier and do not have this quality issue. The date code is on the discs splined teeth area. Refer to the illustration and tables below.

Magnetic testing
OD/Face Magnet Test can only be used for loose piece parts due to separator plates within a built clutch pack. Will feel magnetic pull at outer edge of the disc if steel core is present.
Manual Bend Test may not be detected during normal handling, but would be if intentional force was applied to the outer edge of the disc.
Recommendation for transmissions running in the field is to continue operation and check screens as normal Preventative Maintenance (PM) schedule.
Assembled transmissions that are not installed cannot confidently be inspected for suspect friction discs.
Caterpillar recommendation is not to inspect assembled transmissions in the field or in stock due to zero confirmed issues and suspected failure rate is extremely low.
