Introduction
On-highway truck engine software (flash file identified with a release date PRIOR to January 2002) will rollover the "Total Time" value (in Lifetime Totals) from "9000 hours" to "0 hours". When the "Total Time" value rolls over to "0 hours", other values that are calculated by using the "Total Time" value will be affected. Values that will be affected by the "Total Time" value rollover are: average vehicle speed, % idle and driving time.In addition to Cat ET, the following Caterpillar external devices may see "Total Time" discrepancies.

Cat Messenger"Total Time" is also used to calculate other features. An incorrect "Total Time" value will cause the following features to contain erroneous information.

Effective with February 2002 production and with Field Service flash files that are identified as "JAN02" or newer, "Total Time" will no longer roll over at 9000 hours on On-Highway Truck Engines.Note: Flash File cross reference information can be found on SIS Web by using the "Flash File" option of "readxref.txt" or by using the Technical Marketing Information (TMI) flash file progressive search.Engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) Data that IS NOT Used by an External Device
If Engine ECM data IS NOT USED by an external device (Cat ET, Pocket Tec, Fleet Information Software, Cat ID, Cat Messenger), no further action is required. Cat ET (version 2002A or newer) and Pocket Tec (Fleet Edition 1.0) will show an asterisk (*) by "Total Time" (in Lifetime Totals) if the 9000 hour rollover has occurred. Cat ET and Pocket Tec will perform a calculation to add 9000 hours to "Total Time" in the ECM.Note: If engine hours are still not displayed correctly, the latest file can be flashed into the ECM (if desired) as shown below. Use Cat ET to manually correct the hours by changing the Lifetime Totals.Engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) Data that IS Used by an External Device
If Engine ECM data IS USED by an external device (Cat ET, Pocket Tec, Fleet Information Software, Cat ID, Cat Messenger) and the 9000 hour rollover has not yet occured, the engine ECM can be flashed (if desired) with the latest flash file ("JAN02" or newer) in order to prevent the 9000 hour rollover. If the 9000 hour rollover has already occured, the engine ECM can be flashed (if desired) with the latest flash file ("JAN02" or newer) in order to automatically correct the "Total Time" value and prevent future 9000 hour rollovers.Note: If the 9000 hour rollover occurs, Total Idle Time and Total PTO Time will not be automatically corrected. Cat ET will be required to manually correct Total Idle Time and Total PTO Time.Note: The 9000 hour rollover of lifetime totals has no effect on engine performance. The diagnostic hourmeter is not affected.
