Fluid Spillage ContainmentCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before operating any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. The removal and installation of the rear axle shaft is the same for both sides of the machine. Only the left side is shown. 1. Put wood blocks (not shown) in position on each side of rear tires (1). 2. Position a suitable container under magnetic plug (2) to contain the oil from rear axle housing (3). Remove magnetic plug (2) and the gasket from rear axle housing (3). Drain approximately 76 L (20 U.S. gal) of oil from rear axle housing (3), in a suitable container for storage or disposal.3. Install magnetic plug (2) and the gasket in rear axle housing (3). Tighten magnetic plug (2) to a torque of 90 15 N m (66 11 lb ft).
Left tandem housing4. Put Tool (A), (not shown) in position on receiver (4). Position a suitable container under Tool (A) to contain the oil from tandem housing (5). Drain approximately 76 L (20 U.S. gal) of the oil from tandem housing (5), or below the axle shafts, in a suitable container for storage or disposal.
Left tandem housing 5. Remove two bolts (6), the washers, plate (7) and guard (8) from cover assembly (9).6. Remove 11 bolts (10) and the washers that hold cover assembly (9) to tandem housing (5). Remove cover assembly (9) and gasket (11) from tandem housing (5).7. Remove gauge body assembly (12) and O-ring seal (13) from cover assembly (9). 8. Remove five bolts (14) and the washers that hold retainer (15) to the planetary carrier. 9. Using two of five bolts (14) removed in Step 8 as forcing bolts, remove retainer (15) from the planetary carrier 10. Remove O-ring seal (16) from retainer (15). 11. Remove bolt (17) and retainer (18) that holds bearing (19) on the axle shaft. 12. Position Tooling (B) on axle shaft (20) as shown. Slide Tooling (B), axle shaft (20) and bearing (19) as a unit, out of the differential and final drive approximately 610 mm (2 ft). Do not remove axle shaft (20) and Tooling (B) from the final drive at this time. 13. Position a lifting sling around axle shaft (20) as shown. Attach the lifting sling to a suitable hoist. Remove tooling (B) at this time. Remove axle shaft (20) and bearing (19) as a unit from the final drive. The weight of axle shaft (20) and bearing (19) as a unit is 43 kg (95 lb).14. Using Tooling (C), remove bearing (19) from axle shaft (20).15. Repeat Steps 4 through 14 for the removal of the right side axle shaft if necessary.
