All Caterpillar Truck Engines With Electronic ControlsProper welding procedures are necessary to avoid damage to electronic controls. The following Steps should be complied with when welding on any Caterpillar Truck Engine with electronic controls.
It is not necessary to disconnect the ECM connectors if these Steps are followed.1. Turn off the engine and put the key start switch in the OFF position.2. Disconnect the NEGATIVE battery cable at the battery.3. Connect the welder ground cable directly to the actual engine member to be welded. Place the clamp as close as possible to the weld to reduce the possibility of welding current damage to engine electrical components.
Do NOT use electrical components (ECMs, sensors, etc.)or electronic components ground points for grounding the welder.
4. Protect any harness from welding debris or weld spatter.5. Use standard welding procedures to weld the materials together.
