Back of the engine radiator (1) Fan motor (2) Line to case drain (3) Lube line for the fan driveThe fan motor is a fixed displacement axial piston motor. The fan motor is operated by the pressure oil from the variable displacement piston pumps. The fan motor can produce the same amount of output torque in either direction. The fan motor turns a planetary gear in the fan drive that turns the fan blades.

Fan motor (2) Port to case drain (4) Retaining plate (5) Piston (6) Pin (7) Port plate (8) Shaft (9) Housing (10) Barrel (11) HeadA change in the direction of the oil flow changes the direction of the rotation of the barrel (10), pistons (5), and shaft (8). Oil flow is provided to the motors in one direction only. To reverse the motor rotation, the routing of the lines must be changed. The components of the motor that turn are the shaft (8), retaining plate (4), pistons (5), and barrel (10). The parts that do not turn are the head (11), housing (9), and port plate (7) .Pump oil flows through the makeup valve to the fan motor. The oil flows through the inlet control slot in head (11) to port plate (7). Oil through port plate (7) goes into the piston bores in barrel (10) that are over the inlet control slot of port plate (7) .The cylindrical heads of pistons (5) are held in sockets in shaft (8) by retaining plate (4). The sealing end of pistons (5) are positioned in barrel (10). Barrel (10) rotates about pin (6) which is at a fixed angle of 40 degrees to the axis of shaft (8). The pistons move out of the cylinders of barrel (10) as pressure oil enters the cylinder. As the pistons move inward, oil is pushed out of the cylinders. The bent axis design of the motor causes the movement of the pistons to rotate shaft (8) and barrel (10) . Shaft (8), pistons (5), and barrel (10) continue to rotate. In moving into the cylinders of barrel (10), the pistons push oil out of the barrel's piston bores into the outlet slot in port plate (7). The oil passes through the outlet control slot in head (11) to the check valve. The ball of pin (6) is the center point for barrel (10). The oil inside housing (9) is used to lubricate all the bearings and the moving parts. This oil drains from the housing (9) through case drain line (2).
