Belts
Inspect - Adjust
Your engine will be equipped with a water pump belt and one belt for the fan drive, alternator, and accessories. For maximum engine performance and utilization of your engine, inspect the belts for wear and cracking. Check and adjust the belt tension to minimize belt slippage which will decrease belt life and cause poor performance of alternator, water pump, and any driven equipment. To check the belt tension, apply 110 N (25 lbs) of force midway between the pulleys. A correctly adjusted belt will deflect 13 to 19 mm (1/2 to 3/4 inch). If new belt(s) are installed, check belt adjustment again after 30 minutes of operation.
Automatic Belt TensionerNo adjustment is required if the engine is equipped with an automatic belt tensioner for the belt for the fan drive, alternator, and accessories. If the engine is not equipped with an automatic belt tensioner, the alternator is used for tension adjustment. To adjust the belt tension, when not equipped with an automatic tensioner, loosen the alternator bolts and slide the alternator in the desired direction to increase or decrease the belt tension. To Adjust Alternator Drive Belt
1. To adjust the alternator drive belt, loosen mounting bolt and the adjusting bracket bolt.2. Move the alternator in or out as required to obtain the correct adjustment.3. Tighten the bolts.4. If new belts are installed, check belt adjustment again after 30 minutes of engine operation. To Adjust Water Pump Belt
1. To adjust the water pump drive belt, loosen mounting bolt (1) and bracket bolt (2).2. Move water pump idler pulley in or out as required to obtain the correct adjustment.3. To make the correct adjustment, use the square hole in the mounting bracket (3) to apply tension.4. Tighten bolts (1) and (2). Do not overtighten. The water pump belt is not used to drive any other accessories. Overtightening can damage the water pump bearings or shaft.5. If a new belt is installed, check the belt adjustment again after 30 minutes of engine operation at rated speed.Hoses
Inspect - Check
Hose replacement prior to failure is cost effective and a good preventive maintenance practice. Replacing a hose before it fails saves you money and reduces the chances for unscheduled downtime. By replacing a hose that is cracked, soft or leaking, you will avoid major repairs that could result in a severe engine overheating problem.1. Inspect all hoses for leaks due to cracking, softness next to clamps and loose clamps.2. Replace hoses that are cracked or soft and tighten loose clamps. Before Replacing Hoses
1. Loosen the filler cap slowly to relieve any pressure and remove the cap.2. Drain the coolant from the cooling system to a level below the hose being replaced.3. Remove the hose clamps, disconnect the old hose and replace with a new hose.4. Install hose clamps. Refer to the GMC TopKick/Chevrolet Kodiak Service Manual for the appropriate torque. After Replacing Hoses
Refer to the "Cooling System Specifications" section in this publication.1. Add coolant solution to the cooling system. Bring it to the proper level by mixing a solution of acceptable
