3400 Series Vehicular EnginesDescription of Change: A brass drain plug is now used in the oil pan on the above engines. Formerly, a steel plug was used which sometimes permitted oil leakage past the threads. The steel plug was often overtightened (tightened too much) by the serviceman to prevent the oil leakage. This made it difficult to loosen the oil drain plug at the next oil change, and it was possible to damage the hex head and threads on the plug. The new brass drain plug will seal the threads better, and it has a larger hex head for easier removal.Adaptable As: The new 4W3187 Drain Plug is a direct replacement for the former 5M2669 Drain Plug. It is necessary to remove the retainer pin in the adapter before the former steel plug can be removed and the new plug installed. After the brass plug has been installed, the retainer pin must be installed in the adapter. The retainer pin holds the drain plug in position after it has been removed to drain the oil from the pan.
