Introduction
This Special Instruction outlines procedures to help eliminate frame contact due to over-steer on Medium Wheel Loaders with HMU Steering. The following procedures are included:
Removing the Steering Neutralizer Drain Orifices
Removing the Steering Spool Damping OrificesDo not perform any procedure in this publication until you understand the information that is contained in this publication.Note: The procedures outlined in this Special Instruction will be most effective when frame contact occurs due to cold ambient conditions, or when the hydraulic oil is not fully up to operating temperature. The corrective actions in this Special Instruction will help improve steering system response when the viscosity of the oil is higher than normal operating viscosity.Safety
No clearance for person in this area when machine turns. Severe injury or death from crushing could occur.
Shut off engine and remove key before performing maintenance or repair work. Failure to do so may result in personal injury due to inadvertant machine operation.Do not start the engine or move any of the controls if there is a "Do Not Operate" or similar warning tag attached to the start switch or controls.
Preparing for the Service Procedures
Note: Cleanliness is crucial when servicing hydraulic systems. Before beginning any disassembly procedure, the exterior of the components should be cleaned. Proper cleanliness practices will help prevent dirt from entering the systemIn order to minimize loss of hydraulic oil, install a vacuum transducer on the hydraulic tank filler neck. Refer to Table 1 for the recommended tooling. Select either Tooling (A) or Tooling (B), depending on the size of the tank filler neck. Also select Tooling (C).

(D) 122-2340 Connector Confirm the presence or absence of 122-2340 Connectors (D) (orifice adapters for the neutralizer drain orifices). If Neutralizer drain orifices are present, remove the orifice adapters. Replace the 122-2340 Connectors (D) with 6V-8636 Connector Adapter Fittings.Removing the Steering Spool Damping Orifices

(3) 8J-6815 Orifice Plug
Remove the bolts (2) on 6E-5397 Selector Valve Gp (1). Separate the 6E-5397 Selector Valve Gp (1) from the Steering Valve Gp, in order to access the spool damping orifices.
Remove both of the 5/32 hex 8J-6815 Orifice Plugs (3) .
Install the 6E-5397 Selector Valve Gp (1) on the Steering Valve Gp.
