Start By:
Remove the tandem. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tandem and Cover - Remove".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove four of bolts (1) that are equally spaced. Install Tooling (A) in order to support final drive (2). Remove the remaining bolts (1) .Note: Use one of bolts (1) in order to retain the final drive.

Use Tooling (B) in order to separate final drive (2) from differential housing (3). Remove Tooling (B) .

Attach Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device onto final drive (2). The weight of final drive (2) is approximately 735 kg (1620 lb). Remove final drive (2) .

Remove O-ring seal (4) .

Remove thrust washers (5). Remove shims (6). Remove Tooling (A) .

Remove bolts (7) and retainer (8). Attach Tooling (D) onto ring gear (9). The weight of ring gear (9) is approximately 58 kg (128 lb). Remove the remaining bolts (7) and retainers (8). Use Tooling (D) in order to remove ring gear (9) .

Remove plug (10). Attach Tooling (C) onto housing (11). The weight of housing (11) is approximately 231 kg (510 lb). Remove bolts (12). Remove retainers (13). Remove housing (11) .

Remove lip seal (14). Remove wear ring (15). Remove thrust washer (16) .
