Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove bolts (1) and cover (2).
Personal injury or death can result from grease under pressure.Grease coming out of the relief valve under pressure can penetrate the body causing injury or death.Do not watch the relief valve to see if grease is escaping. Watch the track or track adjustment cylinder to see if the track is being loosened.Loosen the relief valve one turn only.If track does not loosen, close the relief valve and contact your Caterpillar dealer.
Loosen the track in the following manner.

Rotate relief valve (3) counterclockwise in order to release grease. Grease will be released from the vent hole. The vent hole is located below the fill valve. If the track does not loosen perform Step 2.b.
Rotate fill valve (4) counterclockwise. Grease will be released from the vent hole below the fill valve. If the track does not loosen, start the machine and move the track forward and backward. If the track does not loosen perform Step 2.c.

Install slug (5) between the track and a sprocket segment. The slug must be 72.6 mm (3.0 inch) in diameter and 63.5 mm (2.50 inch) in length. Move the machine in the reverse direction in order for the track to expand with the slug. The expansion of the track will force grease from the vent hole.

This is a view from the rear of the machine.
Raise the machine. The track roller assembly should not touch the track. Install wood blocks under the front of the machine. Install Tooling (A) under the rear of the machine.

Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (B). Place Tooling (B) under the track roller assembly.
Remove four bolts (6) and the washers. Remove track roller assembly (7). The weight of the track roller assembly is 34 kg (75 lb). Refer to Undercarriage Reconditioning Guide, SEBF8599 for the disassembly of the track rollers and the assembly of the track rollers for your machine.
