Information:
EnginesReference: "Engine Bearings and Crankshafts," Form SEBD0531, Page 5-25.Guideline For Reusable Parts, "Inspection of Crankshafts For Cracks," Form SEBF8039.
Sometimes, when inspecting new or Remanufactured crankshafts for D348 Engines (prior to installation), grinder burns are seen on the sidewalls. USE the crankshaft, the grinder burns are not a problem. All new and Remanufactured crankshafts have passed a Magnaglo test for cracks, and the crankshaft sidewall grinder burns will not cause any structural weakness.
Some 1W7578, 0R2530, and 0R1233 Crankshafts exhibit grinder burns on the sidewalls. Some confusion has arisen concerning the grinder burns because of a misinterpretation of the information given on page 5-25 of "Engine Bearings and Crankshafts." This page shows three illustrations of grinder burns, and near the bottom of the page the words "DO NOT USE AGAIN" are printed in bolt type. Also, a warning on the bottom of the page states "Grinder burns on the journal or in the fillet are NEVER permitted." This statement is true; however, a qualifying statement about the grinder burns on the sidewalls is printed under the words "DO NOT USE AGAIN." It states, "Use again only after the crankshaft has been thoroughly inspected according the Guideline For Reusable Parts-Inspection of Crankshafts For Cracks, SEBF8039." This Guideline details how to inspect the crankshafts using a Magnaglo process. If grinder burns on the sidewalls of the crankshaft pass this Magnaglo test, the crankshaft may be used. EVERY new or Remanufactured crankshaft must pass this Magnaglo test before it is placed in the parts system.
