INSTALL FILM FOR HMSO UNIT TESTING PROCEDURE, D379B, D398B, D399 Engines, 7403, 7407, 7410, PI3039 U-6 A-4 AU-4 B-3 C-5 E-4 O-4 PRIORITY Problem The hydramechanical shutoff (HMSO) unit is designed to shut the engine down when one or more of the following conditions exist: low oil pressure, high coolant temperature, overspeeding. On some occasions the HMSO unit has failed to shut down the engine when one of the above conditions existed. In order to work properly, the HMSO unit must be periodically "exercised" (i.e., tested) to keep its inner components in good working order. An instruction film is now available to place directly on the engine which alerts the customer to the need for testing the HMSO unit every 500 SMU's or every 3 months, whichever comes first. See Illustration 1. ILLUSTRATION 1 (SEE ILLUSTRATION) Affected Engines And New Parts Needed All the listed engines with the following serial numbers are included in this Program. D379B Engines Industrial 68B5682-68B7892 Marine 69B2017-69B2151 Generator Sets 34Z478-34Z1018 D398B Engines Industrial 66B7444-66B9283 Marine 67B2157-67B2438 Generator Sets 35Z507-35Z1532 D399 Engines Industrial 35B4702-35B6764 Marine 91B1103-91B1495 Generator Sets 36Z469-36Z1920 New Parts Needed: 1 - 4W2696 Instruction Film (English) 4W2710 - French 4W2714 - Arabic 4W2711 - Spanish 4W2713 - German 4W2712 - Portuguese Action Requested (Parts Stock Action Required) Install the instruction film on the oil cooler just above the HMSO unit, as shown in Illustration 2. Customers in the U.S. (for which Caterpillar Tractor Co. has addresses) will receive written notification requesting them to install the instruction film, which will be included with the letter. All other dealers are requested to send their customers a letter similar to the attached example letter. The new instruction film should be included in this letter to the customer. ILLUSTRATION 2 (SEE ILLUSTRATION) If a customer refuses to install the instruction films, you are hereby authorized to install it and claim for the labor allowance shown under Warranty Allowance. Install the instruction film on any of the affected engines in dealer inventories. We suggest that you order a supply of decals for personnel in your parts, sales, and service departments to give to customers when other work is done. Warranty Allowances List the instruction film on the claim. Caterpillar will contribute 0.5 hr labor at your selling rate to install the instruction film on each affected engine in dealer inventories
