Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Test Step 1. Stop the engine. Make sure that the hydraulic pressure is zero and make sure that the dump body is down before disconnecting any hydraulic lines.
Disconnect the line (1) from the head end of the hoist cylinder on both hoist cylinders.
Cap both of the hydraulic lines that were just disconnected.
Attach a length of hose to the exposed port from the head end of each hoist cylinder in order to direct any discharge of oil into a suitable container. Photo...

Continue - Proceed to test step 2.Test Step 2. Be sure to plug both supply lines. Personal injury could result from being sprayed by hot hydraulic oil.
Perform this test on BOTH hoist cylinders at the same time or machine damage may result.
Allow some oil to drain from the cylinders if it is necessary before beginning this test.
Start the engine and run at high idle.
Instruct an assistant to place the hoist lever in the lower position in order to lower the dump body into the frame.
Look for a continuous discharge of hydraulic oil from the port (1) from the head end of each cylinder through the attached hose. Also check the rod seals for leaks.Photo...

Yes - Proceed to test step 3.
No - Proceed to test step 4.Test Step 3. Use a suitable lifting device to remove the hydraulic cylinder. The cylinder assembly weighs 190 kg (420 lb) plus any hydraulic fluid that is contained.
Disconnect the rod end port of the cylinder that had a discharge of hydraulic oil and cap the hydraulic line.

Remove the caps from the disconnected head end lines.
Connect the head end lines to the hoist cylinders.Expected Result:All hydraulic lines are connected to the hoist cylinders.Results:
Continue - The hoist cylinders do not have any significant leaks. Stop.Test Step 5.
Disassemble the hoist cylinder.
Check for damaged components and check for worn components. Replace the components as it is necessary.
Install the hoist cylinder.
