Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide"for tools and supplies to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations.
Locate the primary fuel filter/water separator. The primary fuel filter/water separator is mounted on the inboard vertical surface of the fuel tank below the left-hand steering cylinder.

(1) Primary fuel filter
(2) Water separator bowl
(3) Water separator drain valve
(4) Water separator drain hose
The water separator is located on the bottom of primary fuel filter (1). Direct water separator drain hose (4) into a suitable container.
Open water separator drain valve (3) on the bottom of water separator bowl (2). Allow the water and other contaminants to drain into the suitable container.
After the water separator is drained, close the drain by hand pressure only. Properly dispose of the drained fluid.
