Automatic Retarder Control
Note: Only the ARC system can automatically apply the service brakes. The ARC system can only do this when the retarder control lever is in the AUTOMATIC (AUTO) position.During flat ground or uphill operation, ARC will activate the engine compression brake based on payload and transmission gear. The retarder level can be selected by the operator on the CAT Information Display by selecting the machine icon and adjusting the coasting level.During downhill operation, ARC will control to a hold speed that is set to the current machine speed when the operator releases the throttle pedal. This speed is maintained automatically by modulating the available retarder. A minimum and maximum allowable speed is applied to each transmission gear.To increase the ARC hold speed, slightly apply the throttle. A higher speed will be set when the throttle pedal is released. If the throttle is pressed beyond the throttle pedal position threshold, the retarding system will be deactivated. This threshold is based on grade and payload.To decrease the ARC hold speed, apply the brake pedal. A lower speed will be set when the brake pedal is released.ARC will determine the optimum retarding gear for the grade and payload. If a lower gear is necessary, a transmission gear downshift is commanded.Automatic Traction Control
The Automatic Traction Control is automatic and does not require any input from the operator for proper machine operation in various ground conditions that may be encountered during operation. When the system senses a difference in wheel speed (slip) across an axle or from front axle to rear axle, the system will engage the appropriate differential clutch or clutches and disengage them when the wheel slip has stopped. The system will also apply the clutches based on varying ground conditions and grades.
