Removal Procedure
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove the bolt and the washer that holds the clip for the harness assembly to the valve cover base.
Move the clip and the harness assembly out of the way.
Remove bolts (1) and the washers.Note: Spacer (4) is used on engines that are equipped with a compression brake.
Remove the following items from the cylinder head: valve cover (2), spacer (4) and seals (3) .Installation Procedure

Tightening Sequence
Cut seals (3) to the correct length for the valve cover and spacer. Apply Tooling (A) to each joint surface after installation.
Place the following items on the valve cover base: seals (3), spacer (4) and valve cover (2) .
Place the clip for the harness assembly on the valve cover.
Install bolts (1) and the washers. Use the following procedure in order to tighten the bolts:
Tighten bolts in a numerical sequence to a torque of 12 3 N m (9 2 lb ft).
Tighten bolts again in a numerical sequence to a torque of 12 3 N m (9 2 lb ft).
