Cooling System
Change Coolant
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.Steam can cause personal injury.Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.Use cleaning solutions with care.
The machine must be level, the engine stopped, cool and the parking brake applied. 1. Remove the radiator cap slowly to relieve pressure. 2. Remove the access panel (2 bolts). 3. Remove the radiator drain plug and drain coolant into a suitable container.4. Clean and install the drain plug.5. Fill the system with a solution made up of 1 kg (2.2 lb) of sodium bisulfate to every 38 litres (10 gal) of water.6. Start the engine and run for 1/2 hour.7. Stop the engine and drain the cleaning solution.8. Flush the system with clean water until the water runs out clean. Do not run the engine while flushing.9. Fill the system with neutralizer. Use a commercially available neutralizer or use a solution made of 250g (0,5lb) of sodium carbonate crystals to every 38 litres (10 gal) of water.10. Run the engine for 10 minutes then stop the engine and drain the neutralizing solution.11. Flush the system with clean water until the water runs clean. Do not run the engine while flushing.12. Replace the drain plug and install the access panel.13. Mix coolant to provide freeze protection to the lowest expected outside temperature and add coolant to the engine. Do not fill at more than 20 litres per minute (5 U.S. gallons) to avoid air locks and do not fill the system completely. Allow for the addition of 2.25 litres (2.5 quarts) of Caterpillar cooling system conditioner.14. Start the engine and run with the radiator cap off until the coolant is warm and the level is stable. Add coolant if necessary then stop the engine and check for leaks.15. Install the fill cap.
If the machine is to be stored in, or shipped to, an area with freezing temperatures, the cooling system must either be protected to the lowest expected outside temperature or drained completely. When permanent antifreeze and water solutions are used in the cooling system, the solution should be drained and replaced every 2000 service hours or 1 year. However, when additions of conditioner are made to the cooling system every 250 service hours or monthly, it is not necessary to drain and refill yearly. The antifreeze change period can be extended to 4000 service hours or 2 years.
Hydraulic Tank
Change Oil and Clean Suction Strainer
Filling the hydraulic system with oil whose viscosity is too high for the prevailing ambient conditions can seriously affect the performance of the truck steering system, particularly when starting from cold.
1. Remove the tank filler cap slowly to relieve pressure. 2. Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the tank, open the tap and drain oil into a suitable container.3.
