Information:

Caterpillar Digital MultimeterUse 6V7070 Digital Multimeter or equivalent for making continuity checks or voltage measurements. For instruction on use of 6V7070, see Special Instruction SEHS7734. 7X1710 Cable Probe Group is used to make measurements at connectors without disconnecting them. Use of continuity testers (such as 8T0500), or voltage testers (such as 5P7277), are not recommended for use on this machine; except for harness tests when the harness is disconnected from the machine at both ends. Refer to Service Manual REG00636, "Testing and Adjusting Electrical Components" for detailed instructions on testing and diagnosing problems on the alternator, starter or batteries.Troubleshooting
The list of problems in this section are those that can be caused by electrical system failures. Non-electrical failures can often cause the same problems. The probable causes listed are only those related to the electrical system. Refer to the other modules in this service manual for non-electrical troubleshooting procedures.Starting System
The engine will start when the key switch is turned to the START position and the propel control handle is in the neutral position. Problem: Starter will not engage and crank engine when start switch is turned to START. Probable Cause:* Propel control handle is not in neutral position.* Main disconnect is in OFF position or has failed.* Key start switch fuse is open (blown).* Alternator circuit breaker is open (tripped).* Battery voltage is inadequate (16 volts required).* Neutral start switch is improperly adjusted or has failed.* Key start switch has failed.* Open or short circuit in starter harness.* Start relay in relay panel has failed.* Start relay located beneath seat support has failed.* Starter has failed. Problem: Engine cranks but will not start. Probable Cause:* Shutdown solenoid has failed (no fuel to engine).* Open or short circuit in shutdown solenoid harness.Warning System
All of the lamps in the warning light group should illuminate when the start switch is in the RUN position. The warning horn should sound for a few seconds as the engine is started. Once the engine has started and is operating normally, the horn and all of the lamps in the warning light group should be off. Problem: Warning lights do not illuminate when start switch is turned to the RUN position. Probable Cause:* Alternator circuit breaker is open (tripped).* Main disconnect is in OFF position or has failed.* Battery voltage is inadequate (13 volts required).* Gauge panel fuse is open (blown).* Key start switch fuse is open (blown).* Relay P3 has failed.* Open or short circuit in warning system harness.* Key start switch has failed.* Warning light group has failed. Problem: All warning lights remain lit when engine is running, warning horn DOES NOT sound during engine start-up. Probable cause:*
