Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
This test will help to determine whether the lift cylinders are causing a drift problem. When the oil port at the head end of the lift cylinder is blocked, the lift cylinder should not move during a drift test. If the lift cylinder moves, there is internal leakage in the lift cylinder. This test will determine whether the right cylinder or the left cylinder is causing the drift.Perform this test with an empty bucket.

Prepare the machine for testing by completing the procedure that is specified in the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting" for the machine that is being serviced.
Start the engine. Warm the hydraulic oil to normal operating temperature of approximately 49 to 65°C (120 to 150°F).
Move the lift cylinder in and out for five repetitions in order to make sure that there is warm oil in the lift cylinder.
Raise the bucket off the ground approximately 1 m (3.3 ft). Place a support block under the bucket. Lower the bucket onto the support block.
Stop the engine.
Make sure that the hydraulic oil pressure is relieved from the hydraulic system by completing the procedure that is specified in Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.

Lift Cylinder Lines (Right Side) (1) Hose for head end. (2) Bolt. (3) Split flange. (4) Manifold.
There are two hoses (1) that connect to the head ends of the lift cylinders. Remove one hose assembly (1) from one of the manifolds (4) .
Install tooling (A) on the manifold (4) .
Start the engine and run the engine at low idle.
Tilt back the bucket. Remove the support block that was placed under the bucket.
Shut off the engine.
Turn the engine start key to the ON position. Place the lift control lever in the FLOAT position. Measure the distance of rod movement in one minute. For a new cylinder, the maximum rod movement in one minute is 3.0
