Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires, and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.
Drain the transmission oil into a suitable container. The capacity of the transmission is 62 L (16 US gal).

Position the torque converter, the transmission and the transfer case on Tooling (A) and on wood blocks, as shown.

Remove three bolts (1) and relief valve (2) from torque converter (3) .

Remove four bolts (5) and the washers from tube assembly (6) and transmission magnetic screen (4) .

Remove tube assembly (6) from transmission pump (8) .
Remove two tube assemblies (10) from steering pump (7) and brake pump (9) .

Remove bolt (11) and hose assembly (12) from torque converter (3) .

Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling around steering pump (7) and brake pump (9) .
Remove three bolts (13) and the washers.
Remove steering pump (7), transmission pump (8) and brake pump (9) from the torque converter. The weight of the three pumps as a unit is 80 kg (176 lb).

Install Tooling (B) to the transmission and the transfer gears, as shown. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting chains to Tooling (B) .Note: The hoist and lifting chains will be used to hold the transmission and the transfer gears in place while you are separating the torque converter. The combined weight of the transmission and transfer gears is 1160 kg (2560 lb).

Remove five bolts (15) and manifold (16) from transmission (14) and torque converter (3) .

Install Tooling (C) to torque converter (3). Attach a hoist and suitable lifting chain to Tooling (C) .

Remove eleven bolts (18) and the washers that secure transmission (14) to torque converter (3) .
Remove two brackets (17) .

Use the hoist to carefully remove torque converter (3) from transmission (14). The weight of the torque converter is 240 kg (530 lb).

Remove output shaft (20) .
