Information:
Machines With Multi-Piece Wheel RimsCaution must always be used when service is done on, or in the area of multi-piece wheel rims. The serviceman must remember the possible dangers that are present with multi-piece rims.
Some of the important procedures that must be remembered are shown below: ... Never use a hammer or any other object to force rim components in place or to take the components apart on inflated tires.... A clip-on-chuck, that permits a person to stand clear of the potential path of the rim components, must always be used to inflate the tires on these rims.... Tires on multi-piece rims must be deflated, by removal of the valve core, before the wheel is removed from the axle. This must also be done before the tire is removed from the rim.... Damaged rim components must not be reworked or used again. This includes welding.... A rubber-type lubricant must be put on the tire bead and the contact surfaces of the rim during assembly of the wheel and inflation of the tire.... Tires must be inside a restraining device (equipment built to give protection) when they are inflated. If this is not possible, the serviceman must be sure to stand clear of the tire and rim components, when the tire is inflated.... Whenever a tire is in a restraining device, the serviceman must not rest or lean any part of his body or equipment against the device.... Tires that are partially inflated to seat the components, while they are outside a restraining device, must not be inflated to more than 20 kPa (3 psi).... After a tire has been inflated, it must be inspected. Make sure all components are correctly seated, while it is still in the restraining device.... Whenever multi-piece wheel rims are handled, persons must stay out of the potential path of the rim components.
The United States of America's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard, "Servicing Multi-Piece Rim Wheels" (29 CFR 1910.177) has more complete information which can be used as a guide by the serviceman. Although the information in this standard is specifically for tube-type tires it can also be used for tubeless tires.
Also, the serviceman must remember that corrosion of rim parts can cause metal failures and leakage. This can possibly cause a violent separation of the parts from the machine. To prevent this, rim parts must be thoroughly cleaned and painted again if there is any sign of rust or corrosion when a tire is changed. If there is severe rusting or pitting, new parts must be used.
Our recommendation is to read and understand the information in the OSHA standard. The use of this information will permit you to safely service multi-piece rims.
