ALTERNATOR 3851630 - Caterpillar

Start By:
Remove the turbocharger. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Turbocharger - Remove" for the engine that is being serviced.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Place the turbocharger in position on Tooling (A).
Place marks on the housings and the cartridge for correct installation and alignment at assembly.
Remove clamp (2) and compressor housing (1).

Remove clamp (4) and cartridge housing (3) from the turbine housing.
Remove the O-ring seal from the compressor side of the cartridge housing.

Place the turbine wheel assembly in position on Tooling (B). Note: When you loosen the nut, do not place a side force on the shaft.
Remove the nut and compressor wheel (5) from the wheel shaft.

Remove turbine wheel assembly (7) and shroud (6) from the cartridge housing.

Remove seal ring (8) from wheel shaft (7).

Use Tooling (C) in order to remove snap ring (9) that holds insert (10).

Use two screwdrivers in order to remove insert (10) from cartridge housing (3).

Push sleeve (11) out of insert (10). Remove O-ring seal (12) from insert (10).

Remove two seal rings (13) from sleeve (11).

Remove deflector (17), ring (21), sleeve (16), bearing (20), ring (15), snap ring (19), bearing (14), and snap ring (18). Use Tooling (D) in order to snap rings (18) and (19). Note: Check the oil hole in bearing (20). If the oil hole is not open this will cause bearing failure.

Turn over the housing and use Tooling (D) in order to remove snap rings (23) and (24). Remove snap ring (23), sleeve (25), bearing (22), and snap ring (24).
Check all the parts of the turbocharger for damage. If the parts have damage, use new parts for replacement.
