J1939 Code     CDL Code     Description     Notes
97-3     3547-3     Water in Fuel Indicator : Voltage Above Normal     An open circuit in the Water-In-Fuel sensor circuit has been detected.
Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps    Values    Results
1. Inspect the Water in Fuel Sensor
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the sensor from the wiring harness connector.
C. Use a jumper wire in order to create a short between terminal 1 (SIGNAL) and terminal 2 (RETURN).
D. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
E. Establish communication between Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and the applicable Electronic Control Module (ECM). Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
F. Look for an active 97-15 or E232 (1) code after 45 seconds.

Active Codes
Result: A 97-15 or E232 (1) code is active.
A failed sensor has been detected.
Repair: Replace the sensor, return the unit to service.
Result: A 97-15 or E232 (1) code is not active.
Remove the jumper wire.
Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Measure the Voltage at the Sensor Connector
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the sensor connector.
C. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
D. Measure the voltage between pin 2 (RETURN) and pin 3 (SUPPLY) on the wiring harness connector for the WIF sensor.
E. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.

Voltage
Result: The measured voltage is 8VDC/ 1VDC.
There is an open in the signal wire. Refer to the machine-specific schematic in order to troubleshoot the signal wire.
Repair: Repair or replace the wiring harness as necessary.
Return the unit to service.
Result: The measured voltage is not 8VDC/ 1VDC.
Proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Measure the Battery Supply Voltage at the Sensor Connector
A. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
B. Measure the voltage between pin 3 (SUPPLY) and a known good ground source on the wiring harness connector for the WIF sensor.
C. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.

Voltage
Result: The measured voltage is 8VDC/ 1VDC.
There is an open in the return wire. Refer to the machine-specific schematic in order to troubleshoot the return wire.
Repair: Repair or replace the wiring harness as necessary.
Return the unit to service.
Result: The measured voltage is not 8VDC/ 1VDC.
There is an open in the supply wire. Refer to the machine-specific schematic in order to troubleshoot the supply wire.
Repair: Repair or replace the wiring harness as necessary.
Return the unit to service.
