Illustration 1 g00653658Ether starting aid switch (1) should be in the AUTO position during normal operation. When the starting motor is engaged and the temperatures of the engine coolant and of the oil are below 10°C (50°F), the ether will be automatically injected into the engine. The Electronic Technician (ET) must be used to turn off the automatic injections.The Electronic Control Module (ECM) for the engine determines the need for the ether injection system. Five parameters determine the amount of ether that is injected and the duration of the injection.

Engine rpm
Position of engine start switch
Position of the ether starting aid switch
Excessive ether (starting fluid) can cause piston and ring damage. Use ether for cold weather starting purposes only.
Note: The ether starting aid should only be used in the MANUAL position for cold weather starting. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU5898, "Cold Weather Recommendations".To inject the ether manually, leave engine start switch (1) in the ON position. Push the top half of ether starting aid switch (1). This causes the ether to be injected for an additional five seconds after the standard cycle has been completed.
