A new plate assembly (1) is now used on the machines. The new plate assembly is the battery box cover. The new plate assembly is now used due to changes to the battery box that is a nonserviceable item.Adaptable To: The new 317-6951 Plate As (1) replaces the former 249-2978 Tread Plate in the 232-4573 Case and Frame Gp. The new plate assembly is a direct replacement for the former tread plate.Note: For machines DFA1-217 and DFJ1-276, the engine enclosure may have been updated on some machines. If the engine enclosure has been updated, the new 317-6951 Plate As (1) will not bolt to the air filter frame assembly. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS4202, "Procedure for the Removal and the Replacement of the engine Enclosure on the 631G and 637G Wheel Tractor-Scraper". If the engine enclosure has not been updated, the plate assembly will work on the machines.The new 317-6951 Plate As (1) is adaptable to machines DFA217-333 and DFJ277-365 as part of the updated engine enclosure. The new plate assembly became effective in production with the machines DFA334-UP and DFJ366-UP.

Changes to the battery box and the battery box cover are on the newer machines. The changes were also part of changes to the engine enclosure. The position of the bosses that help support the air filter frame assembly (2) changed. Two new bosses must be added to the new battery box cover in order to fit the older machines that have the updated engine enclosure. The two new bosses will help support the air filter frame assembly (2) on the older machines.For the complete information on the changes to the engine enclosure, refer to Special Instruction, REHS4202, "Procedure for the Removal and the Replacement of the engine Enclosure on the 631G and 637G Wheel Tractor-Scraper".Use the following procedure in order to adapt the new 317-6951 Plate As to fit the machines DFA1-217 and DFJ1-276 that have the updated engine enclosure.

On the back side of the cover, drill a pilot hole 27 mm (1 1/16 inch) forward from the center of the existing bosses.
On the bottom side of the tubing, enlarge the hole to 3/4 inch in order to allow the boss to slide into the tube.
On the top side of the cover, enlarge the hole to 17/32 inch in order to allow the bolts for the air filter frame assembly to fit.

Insert one 315-4823 Boss (3) into each hole on the bottom side of the cover. For the proper welding procedures, refer to Special Instruction, REHS1841, "General Welding Procedures". By using a fillet weld, weld the bosses into position. The fillet weld should meet the following specifications.
