Required Tools
Tool    Item    Qty    Part No    Description
A         198-4240     Digital Pressure Indicator Gp
    A1     1     198-4234     Digital Indicator
A2 2     198-4239     Pressure Sensor Gp
(0 to 41,368 kPa (0 to 6,000 psi))
A3 2     198-4236     Adapter Cable As    Machine Preparation
Move the machine to a smooth, horizontal location that is away from operating machines and away from personnel.
Place the transmission direction in the NEUTRAL position.
Engage the parking brake.
Lower the bucket or the work tool to the ground.
Stop the engine.
To release any steering system pressure, turn the steering wheel to the left and to the right.ReferenceFor more information about relieving the hydraulic pressure, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.ReferenceFor more information about preparing the machine for Testing and Adjusting, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Testing and Adjusting" for the machine that is being serviced.Test Procedure
Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel away from the machine or in sight of the operator.
Be sure to relieve the pressure in the hydraulic system.
Illustration 2 g03614661
Remove access panel from right rear inner wheel well to gain access to the steering pump. The pressure tap for the steering pump discharge pressure is located on the fitting coming off the pump.
Illustration 3 g03614677
Attach tooling (A) to steering pump discharge pressure test tap.
Illustration 4 g03614879
Also attach tooling (A) to the steering load sensing line pressure tap located on the steering HMU under the machine cab.
Start the engine and warm the hydraulic oil to a normal operating temperature of approximately 49 to 65°C (120 to 150°F).
Run the engine at LOW idle. Check for hydraulic oil leaks.
Run the engine at HIGH idle.
Slowly turn the steering wheel to the left or to the right.
Record the differential pressure indicated on tooling (A) as the steering wheel is turned slowly. Refer to table 1 for the correct pressure.
Stop the engine.
The margin pressure is the difference between the discharge pressure of the steering piston pump and the signal pressure from the steering metering pump. If the margin pressure is not correct, perform the Testing and Adjusting, "Piston Pump (Steering) Low Pressure Standby - Test and Adjust" and Testing and Adjusting, "Piston Pump (Steering) High Pressure Stall - Test and Adjust" before adjusting the pump controller.
If the pressure is correct, proceed to Step 13. If the steering pump margin setting must be adjusted and all other testing has been performed, perform the following steps:
Illustration 5 g03614816
Remove left access panel which is below the cab entry door on the left side of the machine to gain access to the steering pump pressure cutout valve.
Illustration 6 g03614717
The load sense (LS) cutout port is marked with an (F) on the pump.
Use a flat screw driver to loosen the outer locknut .
