Storage Procedures
Ideally the motor should be stored in a climate-controlled environment with the following characteristics:
Low relative humidity
A stable support, free from excessive vibrations and shocks. If vibrations are suspected, the motor should be isolated by placing suitable rubber blocks under the motor feet.
Ventilated air which is clean and free from dust or corrosive gases.
A stable temperature at least 5° C (9° F) above the dew point and above 10° C (50° F).
Protected against harmful insects and vermin.
Uncrate and remove all plastic wrap from the motor.Note: The motor can be left on the shipping skid and recrated.
The procedure in Step 2 is only applicable for motors with sleeve bearings.
Spray inside the sleeve bearings with anti-corrision product "Tectyl 511" through the fill hole. If the bearings cannot be sprayed with "Tectyl 511", fill the bearings with Cat® HYDO Advanced 10 oil. Repeat the corrosion protection treatment every six months. If the bearing has been filled with Cat® HYDO Advanced 10 oil, check the oil level in the site glass and fill as necessary.Disassemble, inspect, and clean or replace the bearing prior to commissioning the motor. A bearing shell must be replaced if showing signs of shaft imprints. Drain all storage fluids and refill with the proper oil. Verify that the shaft rotates without restriction once the bearing is filled with oil.Note: Machines with sleeve bearings are delivered without lubricant. To prevent spillage into the motor, oil must be drained prior to transportation.Caterpillar strongly recommends that the shaft is rotated 10 turns every six months. Ensure that the shaft is resting on a different spot after the rotation is completed. A small amount of oil should be poured over the bearing before rotating the shaft. Rotate the shaft when the motor is received and after the anti-corrosion product is added.Note: Remove the shaft locking device prior to shaft rotation. Replace the locking device after rotation and tighten to the proper torque.
The procedure in Step 3 is only applicable for motors with anti-friction bearings.
Add grease to the anti-friction bearings once the motor is received. Bearings should already contain grease upon receipt. Use the grease type specified on the bearing nameplate.Caterpillar requires that the shaft be rotated every 3 months for motors with anti-friction bearings. Add grease to the anti-friction bearings and rotate the shaft 10 turns. Ensure that the shaft is resting on a different spot after the rotation is completed.Note: Remove the shaft locking device prior to shaft rotation. Replace the locking device after rotation and tighten to the proper torque.
Energize space heaters to maintain a stable ambient temperature and low relative air humidity. Maintain an ambient temperature in the range of 10° C (50° F) to 50° C (122° F). Low relative air humidity, preferably below 75% is ideal and should be maintained. The temperature of the motor should be kept above the dew point to prevent moisture condensing inside the motor. The temperature should be kept at least 5° C (9° F) above the ambient temperature to prevent condensation.
