TYPE="LEVEL" DEPTH="1" @@@-->The 3208 engine is a direct fuel injected, vee eight cylinder four stroke engine. Each cylinder head has four inlet valves and four exhaust valves. The rocker arms and the valves are actuated by the camshaft. The action is performed by mechanical roller or slipper lifters and push rods.A full-range hydramechanical governor controls the fuel injection pump output, maintaining the engine rpm selected by the operator. A fuel injection pump meters and pumps fuel under high pressure to a fuel injection nozzle for each cylinder.An automatic timing advance (standard on non-certified [emissions] engines) to provide the best fuel injection timing over the full range of engine speed.Emissions certified 3208 T, ATAAC, and JWAC engines for off-road mobile applications do not have an automatic timing advance. Those engines have a torsional damper in place of the timing advance in order to improve the life of the gear train.All emissions certified engines are equipped with an air/fuel ratio control, located on the governor. The air/fuel ratio control restricts the fuel rack movement. Only the proper amount of fuel is allowed to be injected into the cylinders during acceleration. This minimizes exhaust smoke.Emissions certified engines are equipped with a protection group that discourages tampering with the air/fuel ratio control setting. Standard bolts have been replaced by tamper resistant bolts. This is required by emissions regulations.The 3208 engines are available as naturally aspirated or turbocharged or turbocharged with air-to-air-aftercooling (ATAAC) or turbocharged with jacket water aftercooling (JWAC).Inlet air is filtered by an air cleaner. In turbocharged engines, the inlet air is compressed by a turbocharger before the air enters the engine cylinders. The turbocharger is driven by engine exhaust. In aftercooled engines, the inlet air (heated from the turbocharger compression) is cooled for improved combustion efficiency.The cooling system consists of:* a belt driven centrifugal pump* two thermostats which regulates the engine coolant temperature* an oil cooler* a radiator (incorporating a shunt system)* an aftercooler (aftercooled engines)The engine lubricating oil, which is both cooled and filtered, is supplied by a gear-type pump. A bypass valve prevents excessive oil pressure while ensuring an unrestricted flow of lubrication oil to the engine parts if oil viscosity is high, or if the oil cooler or the oil filter elements become plugged.Engine efficiency, efficiency of emission controls, and engine performance depend on adherence to proper operation and maintenance recommendations. Engine performance and efficiency also depend on the use of recommended fuels, lubrication oils, and coolants.
