Troubleshooting
For Specifications with illustrations, make reference to SPECIFICATIONS FOR 140B MOTOR GRADER POWER CONTROL, Form No. SENR2757. If the Specifications in Form SENR2757 are not the same as in the Systems Operation and the Testing and Adjusting, look at the printing date on the back cover of each book. Use the Specifications given in the book with the latest date.This is a reference for the location and correction of common problems in the power control system.Make visual checks of the machine first and then do the operation checks.Visual Checks
1. Check the oil level for the power control.2. Check the shear pin between the drive couplings.3. Check the linkage and ball joints to see that they move freely.
INSTALLATION OF A NEW SHEAR PINOperation Checks
Run the engine until it is at normal temperature for operation. Operate all power control systems in both directions. Listen for noises that are not normal and find their source. If the operation is not correct make reference to the OPERATION CHECK LIST for "problems" and "probable cause".Operation Check List
PROBLEM: The output shaft clutch will not engage when the control lever is moved. PROBABLE CAUSE:1. Shear pin between the drive couplings is broken.2. Clutch jaws are broken or worn. PROBLEM: Control lever does not go to NEUTRAL position when it is released. PROBABLE CAUSE:1. Failure of return spring for control lever.2. Clutch collar does not move freely on output shaft. PROBLEM: Output shaft turns when control lever is released. PROBABLE CAUSE:1. Clutch jaws will not release from the transfer gear.2. Clutch collar does not move freely on output shaft.3. Failure of brake spring for blade lift clutches.4. Failure of return spring for control lever. PROBLEM: Ratchet sound after control lever is released. PROBABLE CAUSE:1. Failure of return spring for control lever.2. Clutch collar does not move freely on output shaft.
