How Position Sensing Cylinders OperateThe Caterpillar? Position Sensing Cylinder (PSC) features a cylinder rod which has been drilled to allow a magnetic pulse to be constantly measured through the full length of the cylinder. The measurement of the pulses allows the system to know where the cylinder is positioned at all times. The encapsulated design protects the electronics from environmental conditions offering a cost effective, reliable and durable product.
IdentificationPositions Sensing Cylinders can be identified by the electronic connection and wires located at the cap end of the cylinder. PCSs requiring calibration are also serialized, the cylinder are engraved with the serial number which the Caterpillar dealer can retrieve if the original settings need to be inputted into the electronic control system (ECS).An aluminum tag is also provided from the factory for repair cylinders to input into the ECS if replaced.

ApplicationsCurrently the M Series Motor Grader is the only product where Position Sensing Cylinders (PSC) will be offered as a standard product. PSCs will also be integrated into machines, which have AccuGrade? and Auto Carry options added to their machine. The machines, which currently offer these options, include Track Type Loaders, Wheel Loaders, Track Type Tractors, Backhoe Loaders and Excavators. As electro-hydraulics becomes a more integral part of optimal machine performance, additional applications will include the use of PSCs. The PSCs are designed with the machine at the time of production; PSCs should not be sold as an aftermarket retrofit for a machine, which does not currently have these options.
Position Sensing Cylinder Product Support: Cylinder Repair/Rework There are multiple situations that can arise where a position-sensing cylinder (PSC) will need to be repaired or reworked. This document is meant to list each scenario and the recommended action for a dealer mechanic or owner/operator to perform. More specifically, this document will address those PSC?s that require a calibration file to be loaded into the machine. For those PSCs that do not require this file, the rework/repair options will be handled via other documents. Please note: Steering cylinders will have limited repair options due to calibration sensitivity. See table below.
Situation 1: Sensor Replacement? Assumptions: All components (excluding seals) are reused in the cylinder. Only the sensor is replaced. If other components are replaced, see specific component replacement instructions.
? Recommended Action: Remove the cylinder from the machine so that it is possible to fully extend and retract the cylinder to its end points. Fully extend the cylinder to its mechanical stop and record the pulse duration from the sensor. Utilize the existing extended length value stored in the ECM.
