Information:

Caterpillar does not recommend the use of cooling system solutions that are intended to stop leaks. Use of these products may result in excessive internal deposits that could reduce the engine's heat transfer characteristics as well as damage to the water pump seals.
Drain
When you drain, clean, flush and replace the coolant, small particles, undesirable chemicals, scale and other deposit formations are removed. These deposits reduce the necessary heat transfer characteristics of the cooling system.Coolant water drain groups, installed in the jacket water pumps, are available for draining engine coolant. The drain groups have a 3/4-14 pipe thread connector and shutoff cock. Contact your Caterpillar dealer for assistance. The cooling system can be drained in three stages:* Cylinder Block* Expansion Tank, Oil Cooler and Aftercooler* Heat Exchanger Cylinder Block - For operations requiring the cylinder block to be drained, remove the bottom plug from the right side water pump (1). Also, remove the plug from the cylinder block left side water inlet manifold (from pump). Expansion Tank, Oil Cooler and Aftercooler - For operations requiring the expansion tank, oil cooler and aftercooler to be drained, remove the bottom plug from the left side water pump (2). Also, remove the plug from the aftercooler regulator housing.Over concentration of coolant additive (Conditioner), mineral deposits from hard water or cooling system contamination can accelerate the wear on the water pump coolant seal. The cooling system maintenance interval provides an opportunity to inspect and replace the water pump seal if necessary to reduce coolant leakage. Heat Exchanger - Drain the heat exchanger (treated water side) whenever it is necessary to change the coolant.
Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
With the engine shut down and cool, use the following procedure:1. Stop the engine and allow to cool. Disable the starting system and place a Do Not Operate tag on the start valve or start switch.
Typical Example2. Loosen the cooling system vent cap slowly to relieve pressure.3. Drain the system according to the requirements of your system (listed above).Dispose of used engine coolant or recycle. Various methods have been proposed to reclaim used coolant for reuse in engine cooling systems. Filtering methods for reclaiming the used engine coolant do not reduce the level of chemicals in the water. The full distillation procedure is the only method acceptable by Caterpillar to reclaim the used coolant.Commercial units are available to do this distillation process.Contact Caterpillar Service Technology Group:Outside Illinois: 1-800-542-TOOLInside Illinois: 1-800-541-TOOLCanada: 1-800-523-TOOL4. Clean and install all drain plugs and/or close the cooling system drain valve(s).Flush
5. Refill the cooling system with clean water mixed with the proper concentration (6 to 10 percent) of Caterpillar Cooling System Cleaner. Tighten cooling system vent cap. For proper cooling system maintenance cleaning, the system requires 19 liter (8 U.S. gallon) of Caterpillar Cooling System Cleaner to accommodate for every 300 liter (80 U.S. gallon) of cooling system capacity. Caterpillar Cooling System Cleaner is available
