Personal injury can result from air pressure against the brake piston. The brake piston can come out of the differential housing assembly with force when applying air pressure. To prevent possible personal injury, the brake piston must be retained in the differential housing assembly when applying air pressure.
Retain brake piston (9). Apply shop air pressure to Fitting (Y). Use approximately 525 kPa (75 psi). Brake piston (9) will move out of the differential housing.

Typical Example
Fasten Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to the rim of the axle shaft. The weight of axle housing assembly (2) is approximately 363 kg (800 lb).
Apply Tooling (C) on the mating surfaces of axle housing assembly (2) and the differential housing.
Use Tooling (A) and the suitable lifting device to install axle housing assembly (2). Install bolts (1) that hold axle housing assembly (2) to the differential housing. Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 300 40 N m (220 30 lb ft).
Repeat Steps 1 through 9 for the remaining service brake.End By:
Install the fixed axle.
Install the oscillating axle.
