Information:
Inspection
Inspect the alternator belt and the fan drive belts for wear and for cracking. Replace the belts if the belts are not in good condition.Check the belt tension according to the information in the Service Manual, "Specifications".Slippage of loose belts can reduce the efficiency of the driven components. Loose belts can also reduce the cooling capacity of the cooling system. Vibration of loose belts can cause unnecessary wear on the following components:
Belts
Pulleys
BearingsIf the belts are too tight, unnecessary stress is placed on the components. Stress reduces the service life of the components.Replacement
The multiple drive belts require replacement of all of the drive belts. Replacing one drive belt of a matched set will cause the new drive belt to carry more load because the older drive belts are stretched. The additional load on the new drive belt could cause the new drive belt to fail.Fan Drive Belt Adjustment
Illustration 1 g03864583
(1) Fan drive belts (2) Belt adjustmentThe belt adjustment for the radiator fan is adjusted at the mounting bracket assembly for the fan motor.
Loosen the nuts for mounting bracket assembly that is adjustable for the fan motor.
Move the mounting bracket assembly that is attached to the fan motor in order to adjust the tension of the belts .
Tighten the nuts for the mounting bracket assembly.Note: Only use the correct replacement belt.Note: Tighten belts per factory recommended specification.
