FLUID SPILLAGE CONTAINMENTCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools and Shop Products Guide, NENG2500", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. 1. Block the wheels so the machine can not move. Install Tooling (A) under the frame, as shown, lift the rear of the scraper. Drain all fluids in a suitable container for storage or disposal. 2. Remove cap (1) from the wheel, and drain the oil for the wheel bearings. 3. Fasten a hoist with a lifting sling, or a lift truck with a chain, to the wheel, as shown. Remove retainer (2), not shown, from the axle housing. If necessary, loosen the slack adjuster to remove the wheel.4. Remove bearing cone (3) and the wheel from the axle housing. The weight of the wheel with a 33.25 × 35 tire is approximately 1485 kg (3300 lb). 5. Remove Duo-Cone seal (6) from retainer (4) and the Duo-Cone seal from inside of the wheel.6. Remove bearing cone (5), the spacer and retainer (4) from the axle housing. 7. Fasten a hoist and a lifting sling to Tooling (B), and install the tooling on the inside bearing cup, as shown.8. Use Tooling (B) to remove inside bearing cup (7) and the outside bearing cup from the wheel.Install Wheels, Bearings & Duo-Cone Seals (631E)
1. Be sure the O-ring seal is in place inside retainer (1). Put clean oil on the O-ring seal.2. Install retainer (1) on the axle housing with pins (2) in alignment with the holes in the axle housing. The rubber seals and all surfaces that make contact with the seals must be clean and dry. After installation of the seals, put oil on the contact surfaces of the metal seals.3. Use Tool (B) to install both of the Duo-Cone seals, in the retainer and the wheel. See the "Duo-Cone Seals, Installation." 4. Install spacer (3) with the chamfer in. Install bearing cone (4) on the axle housing. 5. Lower the temperature of the bearing cups for the wheel. Install outer bearing cup (5) and inner bearing cup (6) in the wheel. 6. Fasten a hoist, or a lift truck with chain to the wheel, and put the it in position on the axle housing. 7. Install bearing cone (7). 8. Put retainer (8) in position on the axle housing without the shims and an O-ring seal. Install every other bolt (9) in the retainer.9. Turn the wheel, and at the same time tighten bolts (9) in a circular pattern to 35 N m (25 lb ft). Tighten each bolt one time only. While the wheel is turned, tighten the bolts in a circular pattern to 70 N m (50 lb ft).10. Use Tool (C)
