Location of the Solenoid Valve (No. 3) (Transmission Fourth Speed Clutch)
(1) Number 6 clutch solenoid modulating valve (First Speed). (2) Number 5 clutch solenoid modulating valve (Second Speed). (3) Number 1 clutch solenoid modulating valve (Reverse). (4) Number 3 clutch solenoid modulating valve (Fourth Speed). (5) Number 2 clutch solenoid modulating valve (Forward). (6) Number 4 clutch solenoid modulating valve (Third Speed).
The six clutch solenoid modulating valves are mounted on the top of the transmission under the cab. There is one clutch solenoid modulating valve for each of the six transmission clutches.

Schematic of the Solenoid Valve (No. 3) (Transmission Fourth Speed Clutch)
This diagnostic code is associated with the Solenoid Valve (No. 3) (Transmission Fourth Speed Clutch). The FMI 03 means that the ECM has determined that the voltage of the solenoid circuit is above normal. The possible causes of the diagnostic code are listed:
The solenoid has failed.
The energize circuit of the solenoid is shorted to the +battery circuit.
The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear these diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 1403 FMI 03 is active before performing this procedure.Note: Use the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter for the measurements in this procedure.System Response:When this diagnostic code occurs, only the gears that use solenoids that have diagnostic codes are available.Test Step 1. CHECK THE SOLENOID.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
Disconnect the solenoid with the active diagnostic code from the machine harness.
At the machine harness connector for the solenoid, place a jumper wire from contact 1 (wire 754-BU(Blue)) to contact 2 (wire 975-WH(White)).
Observe the status of the CID 1403 FMI 03. Expected Result:The CID 1403 FMI 03 remains active. The FMI has not changed and the "03" is still active. Results:
YES - The diagnostic code remains active. The jumper wire does not affect the diagnostic code. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NO - The diagnostic is no longer active. The solenoid has failed.Repair: The solenoid has failed. Repeat this Test Step "CHECK THE SOLENOID" in order to verify the solenoid failure. Replace the solenoid. Verify that the new solenoid corrects the problem.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE ENERGIZE CIRCUIT OF THE SOLENOID FOR A SHORT TO THE +BATTERY CIRCUIT.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness connectors from the solenoid and the ECM.
At the machine harness connector for the ECM, measure the resistance from contact J2-7 (wire 754-BU(Blue)) to all contacts that are used in the machine harness connectors for the ECM. Expected Result:Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms. Results:
OK - Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - Each resistance measurement is not greater than 5000 ohms. There is a short in the machine harness. The short is between
