Information:
Clean or Replace the Primary Fuel Filter
1. Loosen bolt (1) on the filter housing and remove filter case (3).2. Remove element (2) and wash it in clean, nonflammable solvent.3. Install element (2) and case (3). Tighten bolt (1) to a torque of 18 3 lb ft (24 4 N m).4. Open fuel supply line valve.5. Prime the fuel system. See "Priming the Fuel System."Priming the Fuel System (If Equipped)
1. Open the fuel supply line valve.2. Prime the fuel system with Start/Stop switch in the OFF or STOP position. 3. Turn the fuel priming pump handle knob counterclockwise.4. Operate the fuel priming pump until the air in the fuel system has been pumped through the fuel return line to the fuel tank or until a resistance is felt.
Typical Example5. Crank the engine. Follow the starting procedure from "Engine Starting" section in this publication. Start and run the engine. Inspect for leaks. Reduce engine speed to low idle.Cooling System
Make sure you read and understand the information in the "Cooling System Specifications" section of this manual for all cooling system requirements before performing the maintenance procedure of the cooling system.
Inspect and test the cooling system with the Caterpillar 8T5296 Coolant Conditioner Test Kit before adding supplemental coolant additive (conditioner).Drain and flush the cooling system before the recommended maintenance interval of Two Years if:* It is heavily contaminated.* The engine overheats frequently.* Foaming is observed in the expansion (holding) tank.* The oil cooler has failed allowing oil to mix in the coolant.Add Supplemental Coolant Additive (Conditioner)
To prevent engine damage, never add coolant or additive to an overheated engine. Allow the engine to cool first. Use the Caterpillar 8T5296 Coolant Conditioner Test Kit to check for concentration before adding Supplemental Coolant Additive (conditioner).Add 1 L (1 U.S. qt) of Caterpillar Supplemental Coolant Additive (Conditioner) for each 152 L (40 U.S. gal) of cooling system capacity. This will maintain the required 3 to 6% concentration of additive.
Typical Installation1. Check the coolant level in the sight glass (if equipped), or remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure. Inspect condition of the cap gasket. Replace cap if necessary. It may be necessary to drain enough coolant to allow for the addition of Supplemental Coolant Additive. 2. Maintain coolant level to the proper level on the sight glass, if equipped. Install the fill cap.3. Inspect the cooling system pipes and lines for leaks and/or damaged connections. Make repairs if necessary.Refer to the topic "Cooling System Specifications" in the Maintenance section for additional information about coolant mixture and Supplemental Coolant Additive (conditioner). Refer to the Refill Capacities chart for Total Cooling System Capacity information.Crankcase Breather System
Service the crankcase breather system with the engine stopped.
Clean Breather Elements
1. Loosen hose clamp (1) on breathers and slide the T-connector hose and fumes disposal tube (2) from the breather assemblies.2. Loosen breather retaining clamp (3) and remove breather assemblies from the cylinder head.3. Wash breather elements in clean, nonflammable solvent and allow to dry before installation.4. Install new breather assembly
