Information:
Engine Starting Above 0°C (+32°F)
1. Move propel lever (1) to STOP.2. Disengage the rotor clutch lever. All other levers and switches on the operator's panel should be off.3. Move throttle lever (2) to START.4. Sound horn (3) for several seconds to alert nearby personnel.5. Turn engine start switch key (4) to START. Release engine start switch key (4) when the engine starts. Be sure the starter motor and flywheel have stopped rotating before engaging the starter again.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again.Turbocharger damage can result, if the engine rpm is not kept low until the engine oil gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.
For starting below -18°C (0°F), use of optional cold weather starting aids is recommended. A coolant heater, fuel heater, jacket water heater or extra battery capacity may be required. At temperatures below -23°C (-10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer, or refer to the Operation & Maintenance Manual for Cold Weather Recommendations, SEBU5898, available from your Caterpillar dealer.Engine Starting with Jumper Cables
Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode resulting in personal injury.Prevent sparks near the batteries. They could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow jumper cable ends to contact each other or the machine.Do not smoke when checking battery electrolyte levels.Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts skin or eyes.Always wear eye protection when starting a machine with jumper cables.Improper jumping procedures can cause an explosion resulting in personal injury.Always connect the battery positive (+) to battery positive (+) and the battery negative (-) to battery negative (-).Jump only with a battery source with the same voltage as the stalled machine.Turn off all lights and accessories on the stalled machine. Otherwise, they will operate when the jump source is connected.
When starting from another machine, make sure the machines do not touch. This could prevent damage to engine bearings and electrical circuits.Turn on (close) the disconnect switch prior to the boost connection to prevent damage to electrical components on the stalled machine.Severely discharged maintenance free batteries will not fully recharge from the alternator alone after jump starting. The batteries must be charged to the proper voltage with a battery charger. Many batteries thought to be unusable, are still rechargeable. This machine has a 24 volt starting system. Use only equal voltage for jump starting. Use of a higher voltage will damage the electrical system.Refer to Special Instruction, Battery Test Procedure, SEHS7633, available from your Caterpillar dealer, for complete testing and charging information.
Use of Jumper Cables
When auxiliary start receptacles are not available, use the following procedure.1. Make initial determination as to failure of machine to crank. Refer to Special Instruction SEHS7768 on use of 6V2150 Starting/Charging Analyzer Group. Procedure applies even if machine does not have diagnostic connector.2. Place the propel lever at STOP on the stalled machine. Lower the all equipment to the ground. Move all controls to OFF or HOLD.3. On stalled machine, turn the engine switch
