Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
11. Check for Voltage at the Ignition Coil Output
A. Disconnect the ignition wire from the ignition coil.
B. Inspect the terminal at the ignition coil output (15). Ensure that any corrosion is removed.
C. Connect the adaptor lead (11) to output terminal (15) on the ignition coil. Verify that the connection is tight.
D. Connect the free end of adaptor lead (11) to spark indicator (12).
E. Connect adaptor lead (14) to spark indicator (12) and then connect the grounding clip to an engine ground.
F. Use the "Aftertreatment #1 Ignition Transformer Primary Override" on the electronic service tool to turn on the ARD ignition system.
G. Look for flashes inside the spark indicator (13).
G. Turn off the ARD ignition system by disabling the override.
Spark indication
Result: There are no flashes inside the spark indicator.
Repair: Replace the ignition coil. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Ignition Coil - Remove and Install" for the correct procedure. Proceed to Test Step 14.
Result: There were flashes inside the spark indicator. The ignition coil is OK. There is a fault with the ignition wire or the spark plug.
Proceed to Test Step 12.

13. Clean the Components in the ARD Combustion Head
A. Remove the spark plug from the ARD combustion head.
B. Clean the ground probe inside the ARD combustion head by running a 305-2389 Plug Bore Brush through the hole in the ARD combustion head. Run the brush through the hole several times.
C. Inspect the spark plug. Look for the following defects:
Carbon Deposits - Use a nonmetallic cleaning pad to clean the spark plug.
Bent Probe - Check the probe for damage.
Damaged Insulator - Check the insulator for damage.
Note: The spark plug may be damaged if the spark plug is dropped. Do not install a spark plug that has been dropped.
D. Inspect ground wire (10). Make sure that the wire is not damaged or broken. Make sure that there is no corrosion on ground point (9) on the ARD combustion head.
