CHECK RING GEAR RETAINERS IN FINAL DRIVES, 776 Tractors; 777 Trucks, 4050, 4054, PI3079 U-85 AU-73 C-73.1 E-50 O-61 priority Problem Each final drive on 776 Tractors and 777 Trucks utilizes four retainers to hold the ring gear on the hub. On the listed machines, the 5T7676 Retainers may not extend far enough into the groove around the ring gear. See Illustration. This lack of engagement in the groove can eventually allow the ring gear to come off the hub and cause a final drive failure. The 5T7676 Retainers are now made to extend into the groove. Earlier machines used a different part number retainer. Affected Machines And Parts If Needed 776 Tractors; 14H206-14H214 777 Trucks; 84A1136, 1286-1406, 1410-1412, 1414-1423, 1431 Parts For Both Sides If Needed: 8-5T7676 Retainer 8-4F7356 Lock Action Requested Inspect the retainers in all the listed machines. Measure the amount of retainer engagement in the ring gear groove. Illustration. (SEE ILLUSTRATION) If the amount of engagement is less than that shown, install new retainers and new locks. Again, check for proper engagement. U.S. and Canadian owners will receive the attached Owner Notification.
