PRODUCT SUPPORT PROGRAM FOR FAILURES OF FAN SPIDERS, 769C, 773B Trucks, 1356, PS0214 U-38 A-23 AU-30 B-12 C-35 E-20 O-26 Problem The fan spider on some 769C and 773B Trucks has failed for reasons other than running the truck in deep water or overspeeding. The failed spiders lack stiffness in the blades, and this resulted in excessive vibrations of the blades. New spiders are now used in production and are available for parts service if needed. The blades in the new spiders have a shorter radius of curvature (more curvature) than the former blades. This stiffens the blades and prevents excessive fan vibrations throughout the engine operating range. Also, the four outer rivets in each arm are cadmium-plated to prevent blade corrosion around the rivets. Affected Trucks And New Part Needed Model Serial Numbers Spider Assembly New Former 769C 1X565-1X2852 4W6465 * 8N4029 773B 63W1-63W1123 4W6466 * 8N3560 * See "Action Requested". Action Requested (Parts Stock Action Needed) If a fan spider actually fails, replace the spider. Either of the former spiders in parts stocks can be used if the chord height of the blades is between 16.5 mm (0.65") and 19.8 mm (0.78"). See Illustration. (SEE ILLUSTRATION) To determine the chord height of the former spiders, simply lay a straight edge across the fan blade 25-50 mm (1-2") from the end of the blade tip. Measure the chord height of all eight blades. If the chord height on any of the blades is less than 16.5 mm (0.65"), remove the spider from parts stocks for claims purposes. Do not measure any new spiders. Warranty Allowances Failures caused by driving the truck through deep water or overspeeding are not included. The participation by Caterpillar and suggested participation by dealers and users is prorated as follows (no other expenses are allowable): (SEE ILLUSTRATION) Submit a separate claim for unsatisfactory spider assemblies in parts stock. Parts Disposition Scrap the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling. Termination Date May 31, 1985.
