Use two people to remove cover assembly (2). The weight of cover assembly (2) is 20 kg (45 lb). Remove bolts (1) and cover assembly (2).

Remove O-ring seal (3).

Install Tooling (A) in the end of the axle shaft. Use the eyebolt to pull axle shaft (4) from the final drive by approximately 762 mm (30 inch).

Attach a suitable hoist and a suitable lifting sling to axle shaft (4), as shown. Use the hoist to remove axle shaft (4). The weight of axle shaft (4) is 64 kg (140 lb).

Use Tooling (B) to remove retaining ring (5).

Remove the eyebolt, sun gear (6), and spacer (7) from axle shaft (4).
Repeat the procedure for the remaining axle shaft.Installation Procedure

C 5P-7373 Axle Installer 1 Note: Thoroughly clean all the components prior to installation.
Attach a suitable hoist and a suitable lifting sling to the axle shaft. Use the hoist to install the drive shaft in the final drive. Remove the lifting sling.

Slide Tooling (C) over the end of the axle shaft, as shown. Use Tooling (C) to guide the axle shaft in the splines of the service brake and of the differential. Remove Tooling (C).

Illustration 9 g00630977Note: During assembly spacer (7) will be installed with the inner diameter chamfer facing towards sun gear (6). Refer to Illustration 8.
Install spacer (7) and sun gear (6) on the end of axle shaft (4). Align the sun gear with the planetary gears and slide the sun gear completely onto the axle shaft.Note: It may be necessary to rotate the wheel assembly to align the sun gear with the planetary gears. If the axle assembly and the tires are still installed on the machine, the tire must be raised off the ground to rotate the wheel assembly.

Use Tooling (B) to install retaining ring (5).

Install a new O-ring seal (3) in the groove of the final drive assembly.

Fill the axle housing and the final drives with oil. For the correct procedure, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the machine that is being serviced.Note: If the axle assemblies have been removed from the machine, do not fill the axle housing and the final drives with oil. Install the wheels to 836GCompactor.
Install the front tires and rims to 988GWheel Loader and 834GWheel Tractor.
